Adventure Summary 12/26/09:
January 17, 2011The party continued its investigation of the abandoned dwarf mine,
working it's way into the inner tunnels of the site and coming upon an
entrance to what appears to be a buried facility used by possibly mages
and students at some point. Written upon it's entrance in very old
Common script is "Windborne Academy of Science & Magic". The
architecture and structure of the initial room appears to indicate that
it is a greeting room with desks, chairs, and bookcases long since
rotted away. Dwarven mining tools now occupy the space and it
apparently has been transformed into a staging area for further
exploration by the dwarves.
Upon entering the staging area, the
party's two "persons who acquire goods" checked the room for traps and
surprises. They found themselves attacked by blackish goo that detached
itself from the ceiling and shimmered like black water. The party
defeated one of the substances, and drove the other one into retreat
via a crack in the wall.
After a comical meeting between two
surviving dwarves (Altimea and Kildrak) that happened to be coming from
within the underground facility (involving rocks, flasks, and lots of
grunting) the party allowed them to be escorted down a hallway where
they confronted a trap the dwarves were aware of. Antaris, Jon's Rogue
Specialist, attempted to disable the trap, but caused the deactivation
panel to retreat back into the hardened stone. Kiva, Kay's Rogue,
helped Antaris by discovering a secondary access point in which she was
able to deactivate the trap entirely. Before she left the room however,
demonic eyes appeared out of the dark stone, blinking at her once and
then disappearing.
The party continued down the hallway and
found themselves at a library. When entering the library, they came
upon bodies of dwarves that appeared to have been affected by dark
"burn" marks upon their skin causing fast decomposition of the affected
area. The dwarves, at various instances throughout this facility, had
been digging branch tunnels, utilizing the existing hallways and rooms
for their mining operation. The library in particular had two branch
tunnels dig in various walls.
Upon investigation of the library
the party initially found very little of value, the books of the
library largely rotted and any arcane tomes have long since lost their
preservative magic. The group then encountered several dwarf zombies
and zombie dwarfhounds. The battle was intense, and the party was at
first baffled by previously vanquished zombies becoming reanimated and
continuing the fight. However, Kalindor successfully identified the
source of the zombie’s regeneration as coming from two large pillars
that were the main structural supports for the library. Antaris and Kiva
searched the pillars and discovered black glossy writing etched upon
them. Scratching it with their daggers, they caused the writing to
dissipate and retreat into the stonework and all zombie enemies to die
their final death.
They then checked the library for anything of value and Kiva happened upon a bag of very rare and ancient coins they could possible sell for gp's. At this point we stopped for the evening.
NOTE: Drogo, Eldrad, and Seth stayed behind to watch the party's gear and horses while the rest adventured into the mines.
